Alpha Sigma Tau History
Alpha Sigma Tau was founded on November 4, 1989 at what was Michigan State Normal College, a university for teachers. At the height of sororities just being founded, Alpha Tau's founders wanted to create an organization that helped women engage with one another while allowing them to grow closer as sisters. In it's early years, the founders spent much of their time laying the groundwork for Alpha Sigma Tau to become a national organization - one that still stands and succeeds today!
Alpha Sigma Tau celebrates it's Founder's Day on November 4th!
What is Alpha Sigma Tau's Philanthropy?
Alpha Tau's national philanthropy is Women's Wellness. Alpha Sigma Tau works to help women become the best version of themselves, and they do this through their philanthropic efforts, too! They believe that women who achieve and maintain wellness are more likely to reach their full potential. The Women's Wellness Initiative allows Alpha Tau members to empower women through hands-on service activities, including two of their national service partners, Dress for Success and Girls Who Code.
Dress for Success is an international nonprofit that helps women achieve financial independence by providing them with the tools they need to be successful. These tools include, but are not limited to, support, professional wear, and development tools that help women succeed in the workplace and life.
Girls Who Code is an international nonprofit who works to close the gender gap in the technology industry. This program provides girls with computing skills, technology, and inspiration to help them pursue the many opportunities the 21st Century has to offer!
